Messerschmitt Me-109D-1 Special Anniversary markings

In 1937 the Luftwaffe repainted a number of Me-109 fighters in World War One colors to commemorate the death of Manfred von Richthofen 20 years earlier. On the 21st April (the day the Red Baron was shot down) a special fly-past of these aircraft was organized in Berlin. Afterwards the aircraft went on a tour of Germany to celebrate the First World War's greatest ace.

The tour was used to advertise the new German Luftwaffe and to recruit young pilots. It was a great success.
