In 1947 bought three ex Royal Navy aircraft
carriers. They were named Karel Doorman,
Isaac Sweers
and Abraham van der
Hulst.
To equip the carriers the Dutch Naval Aviation service (MLD)
bought 60 Grumman Bearcats. The Bearcats were used until they were
replaced by the North American Fury in 1950.
