Republic P-72D Ultrabolt

Designed as a replacement of the P-47 Thunderbolt, the P-72 entered service in 1944. It had a higher speed than the P-47 but was lighter armed and not so suited to ground attack as the P-47 was. Therefore the P-47 remained in production as a ground attack aircraft.
